These Are The Fun LA Workouts You Have To Try (+ the Best Deals For It!)
Fitness classes in this city are just as diverse as the people who do it. Kiss that tired treadmill routine goodbye and have fun exploring LA’s diverse fitness landscape. You might just elevate your fitness game from routine to intensified hobby.
TRX
Try: Evolution Fitness (Culver City)
Catch the 6 am class in this spacious “garage” setting. TRX uses your own body weight against you. They also have an anti-gravity treadmill which is a unique thing to try and great if you're a runner or dancer with bad knees! ($25/class under a package, or use Class Pass)
Trampoline Jumping
Try: Jump Fitness (Redondo Beach)
Choose from 1 hour straight jumping, jumping with interval training or a full-on jumping dance party in a form of exercise that’s super fun and great for your lymphatic system and easy on the joints. Especially ideal option if you’re a runner that’s injured but still want cardio without the harsh impact of running. First class free, or use Lymber ($10 - $14/class)
Get Your First Class Free! (register for a class, which will navigate you to a “first class free” option at reservation checkout)
Pole Dancing
Try: Believe Fitness (El Segundo)
Fun intro class for beginners. You’ll learn floor routines (basic dance choreo that makes you feel sexy), basic pole mounting and a few foundational tricks and spins. It really makes you appreciate the upper body strength of pole dancers and how hard these women have to work to entertain! Society really doesn’t give them enough credit for this level of fitness and artistry. I was totally wiped after class! (Use Groupon - they run various deals)
Deal: Groupon for 1 month of Membership!
Aerial Yoga
Try: Believe Fitness (El Segundo)
Very scary (or exhilarating) thinking that a thin piece of cloth is responsible for supporting all your body weight, but it will! A total challenge for your coordination and self trust as you mount into different positions via going upside down, sideways, etc. You might not leave drenched in sweat but you will leave feeling accomplished! (Use Groupon - I’d say about $10/class with Groupon)
Deal: Groupon for 1 month of Membership!
Plate Fit
Try: Plate Fit (Brentwood)
Exercise specificity down to a science, you perform various strength and toning exercises, while standing on a shake plate. Class duration is exactly 27 minutes to a tee.
(They use Zenrez - visit their direct studio site if you don’t want a class package)
Sandbox TRX
Try: Sandbox Fitness (Sherman Oaks)
I love this concept! Various classes are offered - yoga, barre, TRX, etc, all while maintaining balance on a surfboard! It’s a unique added element to both enhance your workout AND distract you from the burn! They run various deals on Groupon (I’ve also seen classes on Lymber)
Hot Yoga
Try: Hot 8 Yoga (Manhattan Beach)
Yoga classes in heat. Much in the vein of the well-known “Bikram” but minus the excessive heat and cult-ish vibes. This studio also offers heated barre classes as well. Try a week free!
Sculptworks
Try: YogaWorks (multiple locations)
I appreciate how dynamic they make this 1-hour workout session. Sculptworks incorporates a lot of different props, which can be challenging for someone new to the class, but all the more reason to give it a try! You can be on your hands and knees on sliding disks, pulling resistance straps from the wall and finding many ways to tone your body. First time users: use Groupon or Try a Week Free!
Kickboxing
Try: Equinox (multiple locations)
Try a 2 - 3 day pass or week free offer (deals vary on the time of year, call your closest location to ask about current trial specials). You will also get access to the amenities (spa, showers, pool). The West LA location is one of the biggest locations with the most class offerings to check out, but all club locations are pristine.
Zumba or Kickboxing
Try: LA Fitness (multiple locations)
First week free pass, call to inquire. Perfect option for parents with young children since LA Fitness has a kids club that provides child supervision while you workout. It’s about an additional $20/month on top of your monthly dues.
Krav Maga
Try: REKM (Marina del Rey)
This choreographic style of fighting has an intense warm-up portion of class (anything from squat jumps/burpees/jumping jacks) from running laps across the map to taking turns crawling under a group everyone holding plank. It can be very intimidating, they do not cater to the weak (it is, after all, how the Israeli army trains). Use Groupon, they almost always run a deal.
Drum Cardio Class
Try: Shine Studio (Redondo Beach)
*first class is $10, $15/class with student discount
A cardio dance class that incorporates drum sticks into the routine to increase rhythm and caloric burn! New clients use Groupon for your first time in!
Outdoor Rebounding Jump Class
Try: Kangoo Studio (Manhattan Beach)
Meets on the pier, you wear rebounding boots that allows you to jump and move around with rebounding technology that protects the joints. (If you're into the fitness realm, you may have seen the fun rebounder shoes on Instagram!) Use Groupon.
Pool Cycling
Try: Aqua Cycling (Lawndale)
Make spinning a more dynamic experience by being on stationary bikes submerged in a pool! Extra resistance comes from pedaling in the water. I'm not much of a spinner but this seems fun! First class $20 or Groupon.
Gyrotonics
A cousin of Pilates, gyrotonics also works against resistance. Gyrotonics, because it hasn’t become mainstream the way Pilates has, is at an even higher price point. You can expect an average of about $20 more/session whether that’s privates or group classes. The therapeutic benefits do seem to make it worth trying at least once! You'll work your body in a very 3-dimensional way.
Try:
The Body Rhythm (Santa Monica): $30/single class
The Moving Joint (Mar Vista): **New student intro special - 2 Private 1-hour sessions for $99 or $40/single class
Align (Beverly Hills): 2 Private 1-hour sessions for $99
