Top 8 Tips to Staying Fit While Traveling

I’m embarking on summer travel soon so this is just as much a note-to-self as it is tips for all of you!

1) Walk & explore with walking or hiking tours

Let’s face it - the best way to explore is by foot! The absolute key is to bring an already-tested out comfortable pair of shoes; you don’t need blisters or tendonitis in your life. For me, it’s gotta be function over form. Even in Vegas I’ll walk the Strip in a super cute outfit and ruin the look with comfortable sneakers because my old Nike's are still cuter than tendonitis ever will be. Set yourself up for success!

More to the point, whenever you’re walking instead of using other modes of transportation, you’re a) saving money b) reducing your carbon footprint and c) giving your body the fitness it needs.

2) Take advantage of free hotel fitness classes

These days, hotels will commonly offer something like free yoga in am. Either check their online site and plan ahead of time or ask the concierge when you check-in so you can schedule it in. (Often when you schedule it in, there’s more chance of you actually doing it). Also hit up the gym in your hotel! A bonus to that is you never know who you're gonna meet!

3) Also ask about bike or recreational rentals

Depending on your destination, your hotel or resort might have bike or roller skating rentals for cheap or free. When I was in Tahiti, stand-up paddle boards and kayaks were free to rent.

4) Check out a first class free in area

Search gyms in the area ahead of time. If it’s a big chain, then you’re probably in luck because they might offer a “first class free” or very discounted first class rate for a drop-in. When I stayed at Hotel Via in San Fransisco, it was steps away from an Orange Theory (they offer a week free for first time clients). If there isn't a first class free option, most fitness facilities offer an introductory rate to new clients. (Traveling to LA? Here's the city's best fitness deals for first-timers)

5) Pack

Resistance Bands

or a jump rope Both are so light-weight and easy to carry, it’s hard to think of an excuse not to. Resistance bands are very dynamic since it doubles both as a great way to resistance train AND stretch. For jump roping, all you need is 10 minutes to reap some serious cardio benefits!

6) Do a video

Something is better than nothing. Even if you do a quick 20 minute Pilates or abdominals video, you’ll feel great that you got in some movement. I really love using Fitness Blender. All workout videos are free and you can search by type of workout, duration, target areas, and will even give you calorie burn ranges. Videos are designed that you can even do them from the comfort of your hotel room without a whole lot of space.

7) Eat right & stay hydrated

Your diet is so important. Hydration is key as well. Make sure you’re drinking clean water and staying nourished all day to avoid that "brink of extinction" hunger. You know which one: that point -of-no-return hunger where you either feel nauseated or all the food in the world will not satiate you. This can surely lead to regrettable gorging and spending more (because at that point, you’ll eat ANYTHING).

Keep snacks on hand in your bag in case you need something to tie you over between tours, events, etc. An Rx Bar keeps well, a package of nuts, or beef jerky. When eating out, you don’t want to deprive yourself from trying new dishes or cuisines even if it’s seemingly unhealthy; you’ll just want to remember the good old “everything in moderation” slogan.

8) Pick an active travel partner

Choosing travel companions who also lead active lifestyles is the way to go. They’ll be game for walking tours, hikes or hitting the treadmill with you at 8 am before you start your day.

Just remember how awesome you’ll feel when you come back home with memories and no extra pounds!
